Artist's Biography

The artist Ultra Violet’s work is in the collections of the Museum Pompidou in Paris, the Knokke-Heist Museum located in the Belgian municipality of Knokke-Heist, and in the private collection of Whitney Museum trustee, Beth deWoody.

Ultra Violet operates studios in both New York City and Nice, France. Her works are represented by her Parisian gallery, Galerie Heart, at Art Basel (CH).

Ultra Violet has worked with Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and other prominent artists. She is the author of the international bestselling memoir, Famous for Fifteen Minutes: My Years with Andy Warhol, which has been published in seventeen languages. Famous, an opera based on Ultra’s life story, has recently been completed.


History/Accomplishments

  • 1935 - Born Isabelle Collin Dufresne (Later Known as Ultra Violet) in La Tronche, Isere, France.
  • 1953 - BA in Art, Le Sacre Coeur, Grenoble, France.
  • 1954 - Pupil and studio Assistant of Salvador Dali, Port Lligat, Spain and New York City, USA.
  • 1960-6 Associated with many New York School artists e.g. Rauschenberg, Johns, Rosenquist, Chamberlain, Lichtenstein, Segal, Sella, etc., etc., as well as many internationally renowned masters e.g. Marcel Duchamp, Magritte, Chagall, Picasso, Matta, John Graham, Joseph Cornell, etc., etc. Work on several Andy Warhol film-projects, while collaborating with him on the creation of the "Factory," becoming an original "Superstar," cognomen "ULTRA VIOLET."
  • 1975 - Embarked on a hermeneutic study of The Book of the Apocalyspe.
  • 1980 - Wrote the play "You Are Who You Eat" and the musical comedy "Tabernacle of Clay."
  • 1988 - Published her memoirs Famous For Fifteen Minutes, My Years With Andry Warhol (receiving the Frankfurt Library Award, the book is published in 12 languages).
  • 1990 - Established a workshop for emerging artists in Nice, France, while creating Ultratique Art Movement, publishing a consequential manifesto that pertains to her art movement.
  • 1991 - Begins her "Super Sonic Angels" series of artworks, writing the manuscript: "21st Century Angels."
  • 1992 - Explores the ramifications of computer generated (digital) imagery in her art.
  • 1993 - Published her 2nd manifesto: "Celebration of Light."
  • 1994 - Installation Project: "Nuclear Angels," in the Judean Desert, Israel "for the healing of the nations"

  • 1998 - Creation of "Light Pieces" out of prismatic glass, Paris, France.
  • 1999 - Creation of the performanceaction: "The Synthesis of Arts," New York City, USA.
  • 2000 - Launched her first presence on the internet. Filmed a "Message to Andy Warhol" in her Nice, France, studio.
  • 2002 - Launches THE ULTRA VIOLET MULTI-ARTS PROJECT at New Jersey City University, Jersey City, collaborating with Hugo X. Bastidas, Jose Rodeiro, Hugo W. Morales, Adam Russel, Peter Sharkey, Trinity Martinez, Lee Wan Sze and other artists.
  • 2003 - Television Special for NH-Japan Broadcasting Corporation filmed at the Andy Warhol Museum and Ultra Violet's NYC studio.
